With many parents lacking the confidence to talk about puberty with their pre-teen or teenage children, it sometimes falls to other adults in the young persons’ lives to provide information and support. An externally sourced puberty workshop can provide a highly effective way for teaching staff to provide that assistance without the need to get personally involved in their student’s private lives.

Puberty is a very challenging time for young people as their bodies, emotions and relationships start to change in multiple ways. Students can feel awkward, afraid and confused at times, while chemical and social factors combine to cause unpredictable mood swings that can affect family and peer relationships.

If you feel that your school or children’s institution would benefit from a high quality puberty workshop, please contact us. 2020 Dreams workshops can be delivered to pre-pubescent children in the later years of primary school or to early secondary school students, many of whom will be fairly far down the puberty path. We can also present puberty workshops in a non-school background, for example at a community group or children’s home.

What Can Students Learn From a 2020 Dreams Puberty Workshop

In this age of abundant information, it may be difficult to believe that many children enter puberty unaware of what is happening to them and why. But the concept of puberty may not be of much interest to young people more interested in playing games and watching video clips online.

Many children are anxious about what they’ve heard about puberty, but they react to that fear by burying their heads in the sand. Add to this the fact that not every child has access to the internet and it becomes clear where a puberty workshop might be of benefit.

A 2020 Dreams Puberty workshop is designed to be fun and interactive to really capture children’s attention and put them at ease from the beginning. While discussions will be open and honest, they will also be appropriate to the children’s ages and any cultural sensitivities that may need to be considered.

Some of the subjects that may come up in a 2020 Dreams Puberty workshop include physical body changes; for girls that will include ovulation, menstruation and breast development, while boys will learn about how their voices will change and facial hair may start appearing. The course will also cover physical changes that affect both boys and girls, including growth spurts and growing pains, acne, body odour and body hair. Workshops can either be mixed or separately arranged for girls and boys, in which case the content will be adjusted accordingly.

Hormones, Mood Swings and Relationships

The first signs of puberty in children may not be seen on the surface. As the endocrine system starts flooding the body with hormones, young people begin to feel a range of new emotions: strong crushes on members of the opposite sex, mood swings and tearfulness or anger for no apparent reason. This can be a source of social tension, threatening long-term friendships and disrupting the classroom.

2020 Dreams Puberty workshops will help students, both those going through changes and those who are yet to feel the effects, to understand and talk about what is happening. As peers start supporting one another rather than reacting to emotional outbursts, the amount and severity of conflict will decrease, and the classroom and playground will be a happier and more settled place.

Puberty and the National Curriculum

2020 Dreams Puberty workshops sit well alongside compulsory PSHE and/or Sex and Relationships education, deepening and broadening understanding about the puberty process.

Our experienced workshop facilitators are skilled at helping young people to relax, have fun and talk openly about their experiences and concerns. Unlike teaching staff, students are unlikely to come across 2020 Dreams staff again and this can help to remove their inhibitions.
