Young people are especially vulnerable to revealing private information online, because they understand that sharing stories is an important aspect of building a positive online reputation among peers.
Unfortunately, it is all too easy for young people to post or feature in content that will harm their future prospects. Employers and higher education providers will often search for a prospective employee or student online to help them decide whether to invite them to an interview.

How Identity Theft Ruins Lives
One of the most serious implications of breaches of privacy protection is identity theft.
Identity thieves often use (or sell on) stolen details to set up fake accounts, obtain credit or access certain benefits or services. This will often lead to the victim having a poor credit rating which can affect their ability to take out loans, mortgages and other financial products in the future. It may lead to them being refused a room by a landlord, or paying a very high rate on a credit card or on car insurance.
Some identity theft can be used for even worse crimes, such as facilitating terrorist activities, or carrying out organised crime.
Identity theft is not the only negative consequence of breaches in privacy protection. Having personally identifiable information (PII) online can leave a child, teen or young adult vulnerable to cyber bullying, online grooming and even physical stalking and other forms of real world harassment.
There are legal safeguards in place regarding online content publishers and PII, but children, teens and young adults first need to fully understand the risks, and their rights to have certain types of information removed.

For example, we organise role play exercises that enable students to immerse themselves in a realistic online privacy or identity theft scenario. This is much more thought-provoking and constructive than simply warning them of the dangers.
Likewise, by having students lead open-forum discussions, we can lock on to issues that are relevant to children, teens and young adults in their day-to-day online lives. This is a powerful way to help young people to share knowledge and develop their own protective strategies.
