Not Your Average ‘Online Safety’ Workshop
There are now countless online safety workshops and resources available to schools, parents and other people who are responsible for the safety of young people. However, inappropriate content is a huge problem in itself, and is often skipped over in favour of guidance on privacy, cyber bullying and grooming.
In our view, children and teenagers need specific advice and skills training about inappropriate content, because:
- It takes many different forms
- It can cause immediate and lasting harm
- Existing safety nets are very poor

Inappropriate content exists in many forms, but it can usually be categorised under one or more of the following:
Violence and hate
This can include images of violence, either real or simulated, as well as hate speech targeted towards groups or individuals. Some hate speech may be intended to incite violence against the target groups.
Vulgar language
This might include sexually explicit lyrics or content designed to offend or degrade a group or individual.
Pornography
Some children and teenagers seek out pornography by visiting adult websites. Others are unwittingly exposed by being sent explicit images. This includes cyber flashing, a type of sexting where the perpetrator sends unsolicited nudes to a victim.
Of particular concern, is content featuring child sexual abuse.
Fake news
Fake news is a type of inappropriate content that is aimed at presenting fiction as fact to achieve political or personal aims.
Inappropriate content may tick several of the above boxes.
Why inappropriate content is slipping through the net
As parents or educators, we should be able to relax while our children are exploring online, safe in the knowledge that the tech companies and government bodies are protecting them from obscene and upsetting material.
Sadly, there are gaping holes in the content safety net, with regulators and moderation tools simply unable to cope with the volume of content produced by app developers and users. With apps, videos and games generating huge amounts of profit, there is a perpetual conflict between maximising revenue and protecting young people.
