What is online reputation? What determines and affects it?
A person’s online reputation (also known as their e-reputation) is how they come across to others via both their own online activity and sometimes the online activity of others. It is similar to a company’s brand, in that it affects how other people perceive them.
Online activity can be broadly broken down into two areas: content and reaction/engagement.
Content includes:
- Online videos (including short-form videos uploaded to TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram Reels, Twitter, etc.)
- Live stream footage (Facebook Live, YouTube Live, Twitch, vlogs, etc.)
- Photos and artwork
- Blog posts
- Text messages and sexts
Engagement includes:
- Follows
- Likes
- Shares
- Comments
- Reviews
- Emojis
It is challenging enough for anyone to manage their online reputation without support. It is especially tough for young people who are trying to discover – and express – who they are. A combination of peer pressure and inexperience can lead to children, teens and even young adults harming their reputation by posting – or featuring in – videos, images or messages that contain hate speech, bullying, violence, sexual content or other inappropriate content.
Digital reputation versus digital footprint
A young person’s digital reputation is affected by their digital footprint, but these are two separate things. A person’s digital footprint includes any and all evidence of their online activity.
However, by understanding and managing their digital footprint, a child, teen or young adult can more easily control their online reputation.
When young people realise that future employees and other influential people will actively track their online history, they often become more savvy with the information they share.
2020 Dreams Online Reputation Workshops
We created our Online Reputation Workshops to help young people understand the concept of their online reputation and, most importantly, how to take practical steps to protect it.
We bring the workshops alive through proven engagement techniques such as open forum debates, led by the students themselves, and carefully designed role play exercises. The debates give children and teens the opportunity to bring up any issues around online reputation that they have questions about. This opens the way to developing solutions that work for them.
Role play scenarios are a powerful way to develop mutual understanding and empathy, and can tackle issues such as conflict, cyber bullying and trolling.
We also signpost students to sources of support, including resources on privacy protection and organisations that can remove inappropriate content.
We deliver workshops up and down the UK, and have plenty of positive testimonials from customers.
